The Wrong Education

Faith-based schools. A recipe for riots?

Segregating children according to their parents' superstitions is a great way to make a volatile town

I agree.

I'm astonishingly tempted to subscribe just so I can read the rest of the article.

I don't know. The debate about balkanization and religious schools is an old one, one that comes up whenever minority groups develop a critical mass necessary to educate their own; it's only with the rise of Islamic schools that it's coming up again.

I think it would be very interesting, instead of getting into Islam-baiting (which, honestly, looks like the direction they're going), to seriously look at the effect of the rise of religious schooling in this country, the nearly mainstreaming of Catholic (and Jewish) education over the last century and the rise of fundamentalist and home-schooling as hard Christian alternatives.

It's the same process, though mainstream Christians hate to admit it.

I was thinking of the rise of religious schooling in this country. We already have enough bigotry swirling around these days on the topic of mine-vs.-yours religion questions.

The interesting thing about the U.K. is that, being such a small country, they get concentrations of populations and I rather tend to look at what happens in the light of...well, almost a laboratory experiment.
