Mayor: Cut thumbs off graffiti 'punks'

"In the old days in France, they had beheadings of people who commit heinous crimes," [Las Vegas] Mayor Oscar Goodman said Wednesday on the TV show "Nevada Newsmakers."

The heinous crime, you understand, being defacing highway signs.

Another panelist on the show, state university system regent Howard Rosenberg, said cutting off the thumbs of taggers won't solve the problem and Goodman should "use his head for something other than a hat rack."

Indeed.

[Not]Goodman also said that bad children should be whipped.

What about bad mayors? Should we bring back the tar-and-feather routine, too?

One can, in one's darker moments, dream....

Don't pick on my mayor *pout*

He's actually a pretty good mayor. His biggest fault, on occasion, is to open mouth before engaging brain. Have to admit, though, there were more people in town who agreed with the concept of severe punishment for the tagging in question than didn't. What was tagged was a really lovely desert tortoise sculpture that was put in with the landscaping of a large highway interchange in the middle of town. The tortoise sculptures are really cool and added a lot to what had been a big patch of dust. And some moron (who signed the tag and got arrested, btw) had to go paint them bright blue.

Maybe don't cut his thumbs off, maybe give him a teeny tiny toothbrush and a pail of soapy water and make him clean what he did...

Had your mayor suggested that community service was a good rehabilitation for vandalism, I would never have made this post. :)

I don't care how "lovely" the sculpture was, although I do sympathize with those who are saddened to see spots of public beauty defaced. Anyone suggesting that we mutilate a kid for an act of vandalism strikes me as a dangerous wingnut.
