What's happening?

What's happening in Fiji?

The military took control of Fiji on Tuesday after seizing the capital with armed troops, and placed the elected Prime Minister on house arrest, despite his last-minute pleas for help from foreign powers.

The coup is the fourth armed takeover in the South Pacific country in 19 years, stemming from the same ethnic divide that produced the last three.

A report by CNN quotes Commodore Frank Bainimarama, chief of the armed forces, who made a nationally broadcast statement: "As of 6 o'clock this evening, the military has taken over the government, has executive authority and the running of this country."

He also said that he has assumed the role of the president and was using them to relinquish the powers of Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase, elected in May.

Seems like it's a long story.
