Bad news for those of us afflicted with sanity.
I took an informal poll today among a population of one (a friend of mine) inclined toward voting Republican (she's done it 80% of the time) and she thought Mr. Obama call Palin a pig (what she referred to as "the lipstick remark") was "crossing the line."
So, with the national media's support, McCain's campaign is getting the job done.

You seriously think the media is backing McCain?
No, I'm not that partisan. :)
I think the McCain campaign is being so outrageously, ridiculously irrelevant that they've got the media confused. The media convinced themselves that McCain was a "good guy" and a "straight shooter" and a "serious person" and now they're seeing something so different that they can't believe it.
Even as media figures discuss how stupid they are for making a "story" out of such trivial non-issues, especially in a time when there are so many real issues that need attention, they just can't stop discussing the red herrings. It's as some media figures have said themselves - this trash is being thrown out and it's catnip. They just can't leave it alone.
In the end, that works for the McCain campaign. Because every five minutes media morons spend discussing lipstick and pigs is five minutes they're not talking about how empty of substance the McCain campaign is.
