Because, yes, I am a science fiction geek, I give you History of the Scienceers.

Thanks to Google's recent front-page mention, I found out that Babbage's dream machine got built. How cool is that?

I'm never sure how accurate these things are, but I love 'clocks' that measure in "real time." This one tells how much CO2 we're generating, ticks off the number of crimes occurring in the US, and counts down to the time when we're going to run out of oil, among a lot of other things.

Those of you who know me well know I like few things better than finding more stories on how almost everything is Reagan's fault. If you include a few swipes at Tricky Dick, you might just make my day. 1968 & 1980 - the years this "new" (or, should I say, "neo") Republican Party started their march toward power and the country's decline into madness. (More Reagan 'revelations' here.)

The rest of the evil we see is Bush's fault because he's a congenital jackass who, yes, should probably be prosecuted (except that I can still see a value in the immunity granted to a sitting President). (Darn it.)

The revelations coming out of the British Iraq War postmortem are fascinating, by the way: there's a significant likelihood that Bush will be fully implicated in the now-admittedly-illegal British decision to go to war.

No, I don't think we can impeach him post-presidency. I do think we can turn him over to the Hague, though! In fact, I think that's the only way we're ever going to be allowed to join the ICC, if we give them Bush and Cheney; otherwise, they're just going to start at the bottom indicting people until they get testimony going up to the top anyway.

I want, I badly want, for there to be punishment. I want it established that holding elected office is not a license to commit just whatever criminal acts you think you can get away with.

I want it established that elected officials are NOT allowed to lie to the public in order to protect and/or enhance the finances of corporate campaign contributors.*

I want it, because I want everyone, even the United States, to be more afraid of the consequenses of going to war than of the hard work of making peace.

The problem is the future. I mean, all we had to do was to criticize Bonehead and Crookface to send the Rightwing (which includes the "Republican leadership") into a tizzy. All of that would be dandelions blowing in the breeze compared to the (pardon my language) shit-storm that would come from the Far Right if anyone tried to actually hold then accountable--either internally or internationally--for the crimes they've committed.

(And consider--there are a significant number of people who, while not paying close attention to "politics" are nevertheless of the "my country-love it or leave it" genre and they would also rise up against any handing over of a former President & VP to an international court.)

Also? Stop and consider today's "Republican Party." Do you honestly think there's anything they wouldn't stop at to get revenge for what they would consider a purely political maneuver? How many decades would it be before anyone would be able to govern effectively again?

* Of course, I also want to live in a version or reality where someone as demonstrably stupid as George Bonehead Bush can't actually get elected to public office.

We need the smoking gun. We need proof that Bush and Cheney and Libby and Rove and Kagan (and Kagan, and Kagan, etc.) and Kristol and Rumsfield actively conspired to put partisan success over national welfare, put ideological barriers in the way of reality, put profit ahead of people. I can see the bullet holes, you can see them too, but until we can put that gun in their hand and their prints on the trigger and the bullets, people will consider the Republicans to be just another political party, rather than a treasonous criminal conspiracy. If we can do that, we can make the Republican party as dead as the Whigs and the Know-nothings, and we can get on with our lives. There will still be a conservative movement, a business party (a big chunk of the Democratic party qualifies!) an anti-liberal movement. But they will have to abjure the Republican legacy to remain legitimate.

And I don't care what anyone else says, I think it would be great for students to read this post, and I think good blogging should count on a resume!

It's hilarious that the spambots that post comments hawking essay writing services are fairly illiterate.

I know, GDad! I was leaving the bot comments for a while because they were so amusing. :)
