There is definitely an inverse square law when it comes to news: the further away it is, the more deaths have to be involved to make a dent in our consciousness. Nice roundup, though. Puts the relentless rain and morning traffic in perspective, anyway.

Well, it depressed the heck out of me. Not long ago I was considering a temporary moratorium on "bad news" posts, determined to spend a week repeating nothing but good news.

I haven't been able to do that yet. It feels wrong to ignore scores of people dying.
