On the other hand, Missouri is the state that voted to send a dead guy to the US senate, instead of John Ashcroft. 'course, now we're stuck with him.....

Yes, but it has to be said that Missouri showed a flash of common sense during that election.

It's odd, when you think of it. Missouri is not a rich state. There's a sizeable percentage of the population living on or with the assistance of goverment programs. They're socially conservative and fiscally liberal, I guess.

Makes it all the more impressive that they declined to embrace Ashcroft. :)

"They're socially conservative and fiscally liberal, I guess."

Kind of summarizes Bush, doens't it? Let's all pray to Jesus to punish the gays, and let's not worry about a half trillion dollar deficit because, uh, heck, come the rapture Jesus will make our national debt go away.

Seriously, recall James Watt, back in the early 1980s, saying we should use up the environment because the 2nd Coming was coming soon, and God would wonder why we weren't using the resources he'd given us? I really do think that part of the Bush team has that attitude toward the budget deficit, that it doesn't matter because by the time we need to confront the full weight of this debt, Jesus will have returned and the issue will be moot.
