For me, the money quote is: Why did we bother to beat the Soviet Union if we were just going to become it?

This is the argument I've been having with regard to the atomic bombs (and other atrocities committed by the good guys) in WWII for years. I haven't won yet, and I have the deeply depressing feeling that we're going to lose this one too.

Not going to stop arguing, mind you. Just trying to be realistic.

I very nearly quoted that line in my post and then decided not to steal Molly's punchline.

I tend to spend too little time actually being realistic. I value your input. I might suggest that the rise of the world o'blog, while not entirely rewriting the landscape with reference to what The Peepul see in the MSM, can have an impact on what stories get covered and what stories get pursued. It's not out of the question that pressure can be brought to keep this story in front of people's faces until we actually make an impact.
