Comments: Moving on

Welcome home, and many thanks. My blogging would have been very different, were it not for you, and I'm grateful.

(May I make a quiet plea to leave the site up? Some of us have linked here pretty regularly, in your busier days, and you wrote some stuff that's worth keeping around. Some of those rants....)

While I can understand, I'll miss your voice in the ether.

You have been talking about closing down this blog for at least 2 years now, which is about half the period that it's been open. As I recall, I used to read this blog everyday back in 2004, and then you announced that you were closing it down, and then you gave up writing for a few months. I assumed the blog was dead, then I checked back here, almost by accident, sometime in 2005, and I saw that you'd resumed writing. Then there was another stretch where you closed it down. I did not even realize that you'd taken it back up recently (I guess at the end of 2005 or early 2006?).

So now you say you are going to close it down again? Of course you should do whatever you feel is right, but given your history, if you close it down I'll always be wondering if in 3 or 6 months you'll be starting it back up.

Yeah, okay, I get it...mutter, mutter...I'm always "leaving" and never staying gone. ;) And it's not out of the question that the blogging urge will return. As you point out, Lawrence, it has the last couple of times I tried to quit.

I'm leaving the blog up. I have serious doubts about the value of any rant I wrote (There can be no value without proofreading! Editing! Actual thinking!), but I understand not wanting any more broken links floating around the world o'blog.

It's just that I feel guilty, just walking off without a word, okay? As the weeks pass and I don't write anything, some days even consciously avoiding the news headlines, I feel badly for anyone who might be wasting their time, checking here for new posts.

But it's your time. :) Spend it how you like.

You guys have all been the greatest. I think my readership, for reasons I never understood, has a higher average intelligence and a sounder moral compass than almost any other blog I've seen. You've been impressive...but now I'm exhausted from the effort of trying to live up to you!

Damn, Anne. I'll miss you. :(

Please don't be a stranger. If you have the energy, I hope you continue to read and comment on other blogs.

Adam Kotsko once said that "bloggers don't keep their promises" which is patently untrue except for one category of promise: the promise to stop blogging. *

However, I have seen people move on to other things.... Thanks, Anne.

I'll be around, Elayne. I'll probably have more energy to comment now that I'm not doing my own blog! (Certainly your place will remain on my list of daily reads!)

Good quote, Ahistoricality. I don't know if I'll be keeping this promise or not, but for now, you can all be sure that I'll be counting on you to keep me informed.
