Vote stealing usually only works when the vote is close: if Obama manages to pull out a landslide -- and the chances of that are looking better and better -- even Ohio and Florida wouldn't matter. The public's tolerance for vote-counting conflicts has to be pretty low: if McCain tries to pull a Bush, the backlash will make his head spin.

That's true, ahistoricality, but there are plenty of states where the vote is/could be close enough for a little vote suppression to effective.

I doubt that McCain can win with that strategy, but there's more at stake than the Presidency. At the least, the Republicans can prevent just what you suggested--a landslide. I'd imagine a lot of the free-market, small-government types would be willing to shed blood at this point to prevent Dems gaining a filibuster-proof majority in Congress.
